Via the Diflucan® Partnership Program, Pfizer's
(link to Pfizer company page)
antifungal medicine,
Diflucan®(fluconazole),
is made available free of charge for the treatment of
Cryptococcal meningitis and esophageal candidiasis, two
opportunistic infections associated with HIV/AIDS.
The program is open to governments and non-governmental
organizations in developing countries.
Countries with HIV/AIDS prevalence greater than 1 percent
will be given priority.
Cryptococcal meningitis is an infection of the lining
of the brain that afflicts approximately 10 percent of AIDS
patients. Esophageal candidiasis is an infection of the
esophagus that afflicts an estimated 30 percent of AIDS
patients.
The program includes not only the provision of Diflucan®
through these institutions, but also provides training
materials for health professionals in the diagnosis and
treatment of opportunistic infections, as well as in
inventory management for the program.
