Antiretroviral
Drugs
Viramune® is the brand name for nevirapine,
an antiretroviral drug Boehringer
Ingelheim International GmbH has developed to help fight
HIV/AIDS.
Landmark clinical trials conducted in Africa have demonstrated that for PMTCT purposes, Viramune® administered as:
- a single dose (one 200 mg tablet) to the mother during labor and
- a single oral dose (0,2ml/kg of suspension) to the infant within 72 hours after birth can reduce the transmission rate of HIV-1 from mother-to-child in pregnant women who are not taking antiretroviral therapy at time of labor. See page of four of product information.
Viramune® is also indicated for use in combination
with other antiretroviral agents for the chronic treatment
of HIV-1 infection. Resistant virus emerges rapidly and uniformly
when Viramune® is administered chronically as monotherapy.
Therefore, Viramune® should always be administered in
combination with at least two additional antiretroviral agents
for chronic treatment of HIV-1 infection.

Nevirapine is included on the World Health Organization
(WHO) Essential
Drug List. In light of the devastating public health consequences
of MTCT, experts have concluded that the benefits of using
ARVs outweigh the potential adverse effects.
Based on results from in-use stability studies,
after filling, the contents of the dispenser should be used
within two months.
If requested on the shipping sheet, dispensers
and tip caps will automatically be supplied with each delivery
of Viramune® suspension.
For more details about the use of the Viramune® suspension and the dispensers, please refer to the guidelines for the administration of Viramune® 200mg tablets and 50mg/5ml oral suspension for use in the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV-1.
